Choice of Data Analysis Technique for Doctoral Qualitative Research

The business problem identified for this doctoral capstone project is employee retention in the technology sector. To understand the factors that drive the occurrences such as higher attrition rates and how to reduce them in the technology sector, qualitative research is vital to explore and understand the complex phenomena under investigation. A widely used and highly regarded data analysis technique that aligns with this doctoral capstone project is thematic analysis. Thematic analysis entails identifying, analyzing, and reporting patterns or themes within the qualitative data (Braun & Clarke, 2023). Using this analysis allows me, as the researcher, to uncover meaningful patterns of meaning, gain insights into the participants’ experiences and perspectives, and develop a comprehensive understanding of the research topic.

The rationale for choosing this data analysis method is founded on the iterative steps nature of the technique. Starting with familiarization of the data, researchers coding the data to theme development allows the researcher to accurately represent the data and reflect on the research questions (Braun & Clarke, 2023). Thematic analysis is further essential since it offers flexibility and adaptability, thus making it suitable for a wide range of qualitative research designs and data types. By enabling the identification of both explicit and implicit patterns in the data, it ensures a thorough exploration of the research topic. Lastly, thematic analysis offers a transparent and systematic process, thus enhancing the rigor and trustworthiness of the research findings. Despite other data analysis methods such as grounded theory, narrative analysis, content analysis, and phenomenological analysis, the thematic analysis as the choice for this study poses numerous advantages over the other methods. Nevertheless, when using the thematic analysis, as a researcher, one should avoid putting the questions asked to the participants during interviews as the themes (Majumdar, 2022). Doing so negatively affects the research process, and with this understanding, the thematic analysis method can be employed in my research to arrive at a perfect conclusion of my research.
