peer-to-peer discussion 1

This is the peer-to-peer discussion in this module, where you apply class concepts to the organizations used in your projects, and seek input and feedback from other students. Two posts (your 1 original post, 1 well-researched reply), please. See the course syllabus for important guidelines and expectations. Good luck!

Course Syllabus

Use the discussion board to post a question about any module’s content and how it might apply to the
organization you are thinking about, or to ask any question about any of the course content, theories, or
topics and their bearing on your term project. You can ask about any course content, from any point in the
course (current, past, or upcoming). You should focus on asking a brief, clear question about course
content that you are curious about or need help with; other students will not be an expert on your
organization, but they can help clarify and provide their own insights about the course content, so that you
can better understand how it might apply to your organization. What are you struggling with, curious
about, interested in, or need help understanding? Now is your chance to get feedback from other students!

These are Examples and please write a short response to one of these. Thank you

.Hi everyone,

There is one concept that stood out to me when thinking about the company I used to work for. I used to work for the Children’s Museum of Denver and I have come to the conclusion that it is a flat hierarchy. The issue that I saw arise was that their way of expressing these two wasn’t the best.

Often we had autonomy and it was great but, when it was brought up to management it wasn’t always accepted and often denied. After this constantly happening, my co-workers and I lost interest in creating and pitching ideas. We saw the structure of the organization fall apart slowly. It made us not want to create anything for the company.

It would be interesting to look into how this company could have made this better and improved. Or if there was a way that the superiors could have changed things to continue the autonomy with its employees.

.Hello everyone,

I am currently doing a term project with Frito Lay in a separate course. I thought it was interesting that the firm had locally inspired variations of their products that can be sold internationally. With that in mind, I realized that the new flavors and variations would require some form of Specialization or Differentiation involved when entering these new regions with new marketing goals. From what I know, these new flavored products are made in accordance to their local values. For example the Frito Lay product “Sabritas” can be found internationally; however, I am not sure about the process in which the products are introduced in their respective regions.

I’ve tried doing some research on this, but the most I have found was the firm’s worker demographics. It is evident that differentiation allows the specialization process to occur. I am just not informed on how it occurs in the Frito Lay firm.

Hey everyone,

One concept I found really interesting was the “Span of Control.” What I liked about this diagram, is how it talks about how managers must maintain relationships between themselves and their subordinates, as well as the relationships their subordinates have with fellow cohorts. I have had a handful of managers that focus solely on achieving the mission of the company and essentially neglect all human aspects of their subordinates. I think to be an effective manager, one must push their subordinates toward achieving the goals of the company, while also pushing them toward achieving their personal goals.

I am still undecided about what company I should research for this module, but I am leaning toward Starbucks. I have heard they have a great mentor program for their managers and I am curious how they utilize span of control. If anyone has worked at Starbucks, I would love to hear your thoughts about management!

Hello Class,

The organization I would like to use for this module is Ball Corporation. I worked there for about a year during COVID after I got out of the Navy. The class concept I would use for Ball is that they seemed to try and create a flat hierarchy. As a new hire I had three levels of oversite a maintainer, crew chief and manager. Even though everything was standardized because we made cans most days besides planned maintenance days, they had autonomy to make decisions if they believed it would help production. An example that happened a lot was if the printing was off on a can the printer would get rest and cans that had bad print would get recycled. Technically anyone could flag issues on cans and stop the line if the product was bad. This was because thousands of cans were being made a day and it could cost a lot more if bad cans were produced. Do you think this works as a decentralized and standardized example?
