Three-Step Checklist – Ethical Behavior

Is the action illegal?  Does the action violate any laws?  Obeying the law is in your best interest and the best interest of your business. provide reliable research that supports your answer.
Does the action violate company or professional standards?  Public laws often set only minimum standards of behavior.  Many businesses and professions set even higher standards of behavior.  Thus, an action may be legal, yet still violate standards of the business or profession.  Violating these standards may affect your job security or any professional certification you may hold.
Who is affected, and how, by the action?  If an action is legal and complies with business and professional standards, you must rely on your principles of right and wrong to determine if the action is ethical.  Determining how the action affects individuals and groups—including business employees and owners, customers, the local community, and society—will help you decide if an action is ethical.

Use the three-step checklist and what you have learnt in class so far on business ethical decisions, to help determine whether or not Julie’s actions demonstrated ethical behavior.

Situation 1

Julie Powers collects overdue accounts for a large credit card company.  She has access to records of all transactions for any customer.  Julie sometimes looks up the records of famous people.  She checks to see where they use their credit cards and how much money they spend.  She sometimes tells her friends about the buying habits of entertainers and politicians.

Is the action illegal? Why/Why not? (10 pts)- provide 2 research url of reliable sources to support your answer. These must be direct links to the specific articles you have used, not just the website on its own.
Does the action violate company or professional standards? Why/Why not?
Who is affected, and how (positive effect/negative effect), by the action?

Based on the above analysis, the Julie’s actions were: ¨ ethical   ¨unethical.

Through social media, information shared by Julie is made public, and now you are facing, as her employer, multiple lawsuits, bad social media campaigns and your company stock has taken a nose dive: what actions would you take:
With Julie as employee? Why?
With other employees to prevent future occurrences?  Why?
With the social media bashing?  Why?
With the parties that are suing you?  Why?

Bonus: after watching the video, make a choice on act utilitarianism or rule utilitarianism to address the questions and explain how that applies to your answer:

should Batman kill or not the Joker? list utilitarian reasons to justify your choice.
Then, create one utilitarian statement that Julie could have used to justify her decision to share customer data with others outside of the company. Refer to the reasoning of utilitarianism mentioned in the video.
