“Apologies in advance, but given the source material, I’ll be pulling in a lot of sports-related news/references for this post!

The need for businesses to serve their community, both locally and abroad, is such a vital role in the world we live in. It is, ultimately, the best thing to do ethically. However, it also makes a lot of sense in terms of growing the overall business. In the source material, Colangelo’s Suns state that their mission is to provide the best entertainment while servicing and improving the life of their community (Colangelo, 1999). Adding the commitment to community service is admirable and necessary as opposed to just focusing on winning and boosting the bottom line.

The text continues to detail the generous donations given to various Arizona charities and organizations like Phoenix Symphony, Greater Phoenix Economic Council, and others (Colangelo, 1999). When a company as massive as the Phoenix Suns, worth millions, donates their time, resources, and money to their community, it betters the lives of those within the community and therefore boosts the value of the community and the team itself. A community with better resources that can improve the lives of its people is a happier, healthier place altogether.

Another example of a sports team servicing its community and earing trust is the story of the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings built a brand-new $1.1 Billion stadium in 2016 (Ragatz, 2023), set to pay off the hefty bill in 2046 via taxpayer money. However, with a new bill being passed this year, the Vikings organization and the state of Minnesota agreed to pay off the outstanding balance 23 years early, saving taxpayers $226 million (Ragatz, 2023). The amount of money saved is staggering, and can now be used to improve roads, living conditions, parks and rec, etc around the state of Minnesota. A truly great example of earning a community’s trust via serving the community in which the business is a part of.

On the opposite end, a team like the Washington Commanders, owned by corrupt owner Dan Snyder, has seen the team racked with scandal over the past decade. From offering team cheerleaders as “escorts” to business partners (Macur, 2018), to viral videos of their outdated stadium leaking sewage on fans (Dator, 2021), the team has done little to earn the trust of fans or members of their community. The question is now: Who would want to support such a team who clearly ahs no regard for ethics or the quality of life of their fans and employees?

I’m not sure I will ever write  check for $150,000 to a Phoenix organization, or sign a bill paying off a $1.1 Billion stadium. But one thing I am absolute certain of is not tolerating the mistreatment or neglect of people, customers, or members of our community. I am not one to be shy or quiet when it comes to something I feel not right or unethical. Speaking up and raising concerns about decisions or unethical behavior is what servant leaders should do, while fostering a culture of self-giving, genuine acre, and empowerment of their employees (Robinson et al, 2018).”

Successful companies try to maintain a positive relationship in the community in which they do business. In the textbook, How You Play the Game: Lessons for Life from the Billion-Dollar Business of Sports, Colangelo explains that representing your core values in the community wins loyalty to your brand and attracts new customers. Entrepreneurs should remember that part of a company’s stewardship includes socially responsible actions in the community.

In what ways do organizations gain trust and show they are socially responsible stewards? How is trust lost and reputation damaged? Discuss examples of companies that are socially responsible and have earned the trust of the community. Conversely, discuss other companies that have lost the trust of communities and damaged their reputations through social irresponsibility. What will you do to ensure that your organization maintains a positive reputation in the community?
