What is organizational culture and how are cultural values reflected in organizations?

The foundation of a company and its main strength is its organizational culture, which is a system of shared presumptions, values, and beliefs. People are shown what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior in every aspect of business operation, which reflects this. Organizational culture is crucial because it motivates the company to attain a competitive edge.

What impact does organizational culture have on total quality management (TQM) practices and principles?

Organizational culture encourages a healthy working environment. In the workplace, employees are more driven and productive. It encourages cordial connections between the company and its personnel. Because employees are content and pleased in their jobs, it might reduce a high degree of turnover. It’s possible that the company may produce environmentally friendly goods and services.

Can an organization change its organizational culture to promote TQM practices and principles?

The company attempting to implement TQM needs a culture that successfully manages change, including any changes related to responding to internal processes and adjusting to the external environment.

Is it easy to change organizational culture?

No, there is always pushback from employees who fear that they will be denied something they value. Communication is a key component in reducing resistance because it helps people comprehend the need for change or learn more about it.

What are common barriers to change?

Deficiency of excellent communication skills. The inability of the management to support the transformation Employees frequently display unfavorable attitudes as a result of change management. inadequate management involvement in the transition process.

What are some questions that organizations must ask and steps they must take in change management process?

Prior to taking action, organizations frequently ask the following questions. What does the change want to achieve? What effects will the change have on organizational culture? What impact the change has on the staff?

– What is organizational culture and how are cultural values reflected in organizations?

Organizational culture is built over a long period of time and it is based on the values and expectations instilled by leadership. Cultural values are most clearly reflected in organizations by the work ethic and professionalism of the employees and it is also seen through the quality of the final goods or service being produced.

– What impact does organizational culture have on total quality management (TQM) practices and principles?

Organizational culture has a major impact on TQM practices and principles. If the culture is weak then all of the major TQM principles will be negatively impacted. Customer focus will not be a priority if the employees are not on board with the mission. Processes will likely be untimely and inefficient, improvement will not be a priority, and communication will be poor. Conversely, if the organizational culture is strong, all of the principles will be positively affected. I believe if a company has been able to create a strong culture they are likely already adhering to most TQM practices and principles.

– Can an organization change its organizational culture to promote TQM practices and principles?

Yes, this takes strong and dedicated leadership but it is definitely possible to change the culture of an organization. Our textbook gives the example of Hyundai Motor Company. Initially, Hyundai vehicles were known for their poor quality and the company was losing money. Then a new CEO stepped in and made some substantial changes. The changes included the use of quality control specialists. They were very successful as sales rose by 42% the following year. (Evans and Lindsay, 2020).

– Is it easy to change organizational culture?

No, I think it takes a long time and a dedicated team of leaders with a clear vision to effectively change organizational culture.

– What are common barriers to change?

– Values, quality practices/principles, or improvement techniques not being applied to every department within an organization, only to one or a few specific areas. Implementing change throughout the entire organization is key.

– Lack of consistency from top leadership. They must stick with the strategic plan and not veer from the vision over time.

– “Lack of alignment and integration with the organizational system” (Evans and Lindsay, 2020).

– What are some questions that organizations must ask and steps they must take in the change management process?

A great way to begin the change management process is with a thorough and honest self-assessment. The organization’s leadership must be able to step back and assess the company’s strengths and weaknesses. They should ask questions like; how would we rate our current performance levels? How satisfied are the customers? What are our current TQM practices? How motivated are our employees? Questions like this will tell a lot about an organization’s culture and identify where change can take place.

The first step I would take to enact change is to produce and disseminate values, mission, and vision for the organization. That way every employee knows exactly what and why we are working. Then, I would ensure there is a system in place for employee feedback sessions as well as multiple ways to receive customer feedback. I would gather the leadership within each different section of the organization and ask them where they think improvements can be made. Then I would task them to come up with plans for improvement so they felt a higher level of respect and responsibility. I would ensure we had a continuous TQM system in place. I would make sure the workforce constantly felt valued and needed and I would prioritize their professional growth. These are all good starting points for improving the culture of an organization.

– What 10 words would you use to describe your company? What is really important? What does your organization reward and recognize? How would you assess your organization’s culture?

10 words to describe my company: hard-working, meticulous, professional, proud, knowledgeable, scattered, unorganized, micromanaged, demanding, unrewarding

The top three most important things for me that I would like to see coming from an organization are as follows. First, a sense of appreciation for the work being done. Second, is clear and concise communication. Third, opportunities for growth and professional development.

How I would assess my organization’s culture. I work for a small custom home building business of only six employees and the owner. The owner has never implemented any of the management techniques we have learned about in this class. He has never tried building any sort of culture so honestly I think it is quite weak. The overall management and leadership of the business is where the five negative words came from in my description of the company. However, all of the employees really enjoy what they do and we all take great pride in our crafts. That, along with the fact that we work well together and get along well is what keeps us going more than anything. The five positive words pertain to the workmanship and the dedication from the employees.

– What is a learning organization? Select an organization of your choice, and explain why you think they are or are not an effective learning organization.

According to Garvin, (1993), “A learning organization is an organization skilled at creating, acquiring, and transferring knowledge, and at modifying its behavior to reflect new knowledge and insights.” I think most successful major automotive organizations are examples of learning organizations. They’re always figuring out how to manufacture faster, safer, and cheaper. They’re all slowly moving in the direction of electric vehicles as prioritization of the environment becomes a greater concern. Automotive organizations must constantly be looking to improve or they will not survive in that competitive industry.
