Leadership Development Plan DRAFT

When I think about who I am and what my values are, the first three words that come to
mind are community, creativity, and optimism. My community is my family and their support
fuels my drive. Creativity is one of my passions, and it lets me explore new opportunities and
ideas. Optimism is something I live by, and I hope to be a beacon to those around me. As for
strengths, I have been fortuante to develop leadership qualities that help me support others. I
strive for honesty and integrity, and I have a life-long commitment to learning. I aim to grow and
leave a positive mark on the world and these values and strengths define me.

These values and strengths align with my professional goals. I am majoring in Business
Operations and my career goal is to become a purchasing manager. Leadership is an ongoing
journey of growth and discovery. As James Kouzes says in his article, Leadership Begins with an
Inner Journey, To become a leader, then, you must become yourself; become the maker of your
own life.” Knowing yourself is “the most difficult task any of us faces. But until you truly know
yourself, strengths and weaknesses, know what you want to do and why you want to do it, you
cannot succeed in any but the most superficial sense of the word.” I am currently on my journey
to knowing myself and I will continue to learn and grow even after I graduate. My sense of
community and creativity will remain with me in every position I am in. My positivity will help
me be a transformational leader, the leadership style that resonates with me the most. These
qualities will help me learn with an open-mind, and should “planned happenstance” take me in
another direction, I will flow that way.

My learning goals are mostly personal. My hope, throughout my time at BPU and
throughout life, is to strengthen my voice. I hope to start standing up for myself more, not only
when it comes to the office, but when it comes to my home life as well. Going back to school
after being out for 10 years is a difficult road to navigate but I have taken the first step, starting. I
will find a way to manage work, life, and the remaining classes left to obtain my bachelor’s
degree. Once I finish this degree, I hope to continue to my master’s. I will call on my family,
friends, and co-workers should I need any help throughout this journey.

Throughout this class I have learned quite a bit about my career path. While working on
the Odyssey project, I realized that the profession that I was working towards had required
similar skills to those I already possessed. Some of the classes that were recommended are
classes I am taking or am signed up for in the future. My connection with my mentor will be
beneficial in my career development, and I will continue working with them to further develop
my skills. I have taken the Predictive Index twice, the first time I came out as a Guardian, and the
second time I came out as an Artisan. The Guardian is referred to as a beaming lighthouse, and
artisans are considered the strong backbone of a team. Both are qualities that resonate with me.

Outside of work and school, I want to cultivate my creativity and self-growth. As I grow
and learn within school and my career, I would also like to learn and grow at home. I would like
my children to see me as a strong leader who they can always count on. I want to connect with
my classmates and advisors on a personal level. I will aim to be more involved with the BPU
community so that I can be encouraged and inspired by their stories. I have already worked out
some healthy strategies with my husband and with my work so that I can easily integrate school

into life without overwhelming myself. This is something that I am continuously navigating, and
my family (both work and home) are graciously navigating with me.

To me, leadership is an ongoing journey of both growth and discovery. Leadership starts
with self-confidence. A leader is someone who can lead a team towards a vision and build each
member up at the same time. They are knowledgeable in the field that they are in, but they know
they can always improve. There are many things that this class has taught me about leadership.
The first one being that I want to be a transformational leader. According to the article How
Transformational Leadership can Inspire Others by Kendra Cherry, Transformational leadership
is a style of leadership that can “inspire positive changes. My hope, throughout my career, is to
inspire people to be the best that they can be. I have learned we need to talk about our battles
with imposter syndrome that I need to shut the stereotypes out. In the words of Claude Steele, I
need to learn “whistling Vivaldi.” The lesson that stuck out to me the most, was that, while I am
on the path to leadership, I have a long road, or “labyrinth” as Linda Carli would say, ahead of
me, and it will be full of struggle, but I will continue to call on my family and friends to help pull
me through.
