This week in Santa Clara, California, 6-1/2-foot-tall equipment whirred behind white cabinets within a hulking chamber in a one-story structure. The equipment was part of a brand-new supercomputer that had only started operating a month ago. The supercomputer was developed using Cerebras’ specialized chips, which are intended to power artificial intelligence devices. Cerebras is a Silicon Valley business that debuted the machine on Thursday. The chips are notable for their size, equivalent to a dinner plate or 56 times larger than a typical AI chip. The computational power of hundreds of conventional chips is contained in a single Cerebras chip.

According to Cerebras, the supercomputer was developed for the AI business G42. According to G42, the supercomputer would be used to make and power AI solutions for the Middle East. An extremely large, specifically designed AI supercomputer might be built, according to Andrew Feldman, CEO of Cerebras. He continued, saying his company wanted “to show the world that this work can be done faster, it can be done with less energy, it can be done for a lower cost.” This year has seen a sharp increase in the demand for computing power and AI processors due to the global AI boom. Since the AI-powered ChatGPT chatbot gained notoriety for the uncannily humanlike writing it could produce, tech behemoths like Microsoft, Meta, and Google, as well as numerous startups, have hurried to release AI solutions. Some major IT giants, including Google, Amazon, Advanced Micro Devices, and Intel, have created substitutes to obtain enough AI chips. Startups like Cerebras, Graphcore, Groq, and SambaNova have also entered the fray to overtake Nvidia in the market.

Discuss the role that technology plays in helping to make the discovery possible.

Machines may learn from experience, adapt to new inputs, and carry out activities similar to those performed by humans, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). Deep learning and natural language processing are prominently utilized in most AI instances you hear about today, including self-driving vehicles and chess-playing computers. Computers may be taught to perform particular jobs using these technologies by processing vast volumes of data and identifying patterns in the data.

Explain how this event contributes to a better understanding the relationship between science and technology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being used in practically every sector of the economy, and scientific instruments are no exception. Modern physics and astronomy investigations produce so much data that only some individuals or groups can keep up. Some of them record gigabytes of data daily, and the torrent is growing. Many scientists are turning to artificial intelligence for support due to the deluge. Artificial neural networks can sift through mountains of data with little to no human input, accentuating anomalies and spotting patterns that people would never have spotted. Artificial neural networks are computer-simulated neurons that mimic the function of brains. In a revolution affecting much of science, researchers are unleashing artificial intelligence (AI), typically in artificial neural networks, on the data floods. Unlike earlier attempts at AI, such “deep learning” systems don’t need to be educated by human professionals. Instead, they learn on their own, sometimes from enormous training data sets, until they can discern patterns and spot irregularities in data sets that are considerably bigger and messier than what humans can handle.
