The first is ethical relativism which is the belief that morals are only created by your personal values or culture. Therefore, nothing is inherently wrong, it only changes based on where you live, who you are around, or your personal beliefs. The positives of this ideology are, it is more accepting of different cultures and the morals can adapt over time as society changes. However, there are some major downsides of relativism, such as, since there are no moral absolutes there is no way to deem an oppressive culture as wrong, there is no way to resolve competing cultural claims, and many cultures already have an innate moral consensus. The opposite of ethical relativism is ethical absolutism. Ethical absolutism says there are morals that are set in stone that apply to everyone. The appeal to this is there is a universal guide that every person and culture can follow, therefore we can easily discern what is wrong. Another positive of absolutism is that it shares common values which all societies come to a consensus on over time (such as murdering is wrong). The drawbacks to absolutism are that it doesn’t account for how humans have evolved over time; as well as it doesn’t take into account personal or cultural differences, or different situations.             Christian ethics are morals based on God’s character and commands (messages from the Bible). As Scott Rae explains, “There is a presumption of universality to Christian ethics that comes from the virtues and principles being grounded in God’s character and commands respectively. Because of this transcendent grounding, the biblical authors find it difficult to see morality as anything but universally applicable.”[1] Due to Christian ethics being universally accepted and morality coming from a source outside of personal or cultural beliefs, it is absolutist. There are messages that are very clear in scripture that are the “absolute” morals which Christians follow, like the Ten Commandments. On the other hand, there is some gray area on certain moral concepts in the Bible. Due to people having different relationships with God, they interpret these messages in different ways, leading Christian ethics to have subjective aspects. This leads people to believe that Christian ethics is relativist but there is a key difference to why it remains absolutist. In a scenario of it being unclear of what is morally right, relativists thinking would be to pick the right choice based on personal belief. Christians though, decide what is morally correct through their personal relationship with God. This can cause small differences in people’s morals because everyone has a different relationship with God causing them to have a different calling of what God tells them is right. However, they are all still following the same ethical guideline that is laid out for them in the Bible. For instance, in Romans 14:2-3 it says “Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who don’t. And those who don’t eat certain foods must not condemn those who do, for God has accepted them.” This verse is proving it doesn’t matter what decision the person was led to make because God led them to that choice and therefore it was the correct moral choice for them.BusinessBusiness – Other
