1-Read your peer’s response to Q2 with regard to specific problems associated with the larger issue your peer has chosen. What other related problems might your peer consider? What kinds of ideas, phrases, or approaches might they take to continue to find or dig deeper into specific problems related to this larger issue?

2-Read your peer’s response to Q3 with regard to understanding the specific problem your peer has chosen. What information do you know about this problem that your peer should consider or what additional research can you suggest to help them continue to explore and narrow this topic?

1). One of the topics I am most interested in researching is deforestation, particularly in the Amazon rainforest. The first subtopic that came to mind for me is the effect of deforestation on indigenous peoples. After doing some light research I also considered the relationship between deforestation and the depletion of natural resources, as well as the effects of Brazil’s economy on the speed of deforestation (it has been shown that deforestation increases tremendously in times of economic struggle). I am most interested in my initial idea of the relationship between deforestation and indigenous communities because it is a topic about which I know so little and would like to be more informed.

2). Indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest feel many repercussions of deforestation, but I am particularly interested in learning more about the spread of disease, cultural assimilation, and the destruction of land. Though the spread of disease in untouched native communities has been a reoccurring issue for hundreds of years, there has been a recent spike as a result of COVID-19. Brazil’s indigenous population suffered some of the highest mortality rates in the world as a result of their lack of immunity to outside disease. The spread of COVID in these communities is traced back mostly to missionaries and loggers. Cultural assimilation has become an increasingly important issue as a result of mass deforestation under Jair Bolsonaro’s administration. Over 20,000 indigenous peoples have been pushed out of their homes in the rainforest and moved into Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. Forced to adapt to modernity and abandon their self sufficient lifestyles, it is difficult for indigenous peoples to preserve their culture in these unfamiliar settings. I am currently most interested in the long term effects of deforestation on cultural assimilation of indigenous groups.

3a). Deforestation is a major issue throughout the world, but is probably seen most prominently in Brazil’s rainforests. I read that in 2020 alone more than 4,000 square miles (about the size of Hawaii) of the Amazon were cleared for development purposes. The effects of deforestation and the displacement of indigenous people are seen very starkly in rainforests located closer to cities, as people who once lived completely surrounded by nature and could freely practice their cultures are suddenly being forced to move into cities where cultural preservation is nearly impossible.

3b). A huge factor in the preservation of indigenous culture is the right to cultural autonomy and the freedom and space for these groups to live as they have traditionally lived. Deforestation is making this very difficult by destroying the land that has been home to native people throughout Brazil for thousands of years.

3c). The major groups involved are the indigenous peoples of Brazil, the Brazilian government, and all the private companies, loggers, cattle farmers, etc. who are using the land for development.
