Canada’s history is full of actions, abuses, and laws that were considered normal at the time they happened. Among them were rules and laws around who could and who could not enter Canada as a permanent immigrant, or who could be considered an Alien and therefore interned. As time passed, these same laws were questioned and voice was raised against them. Subsequently, various federal and provincial governments of Canada as well as religious institutions have, over the past few decades, apologised to the impacted people. Many such apologies have been accompanied by financial compensation. In your opinion, does such financial compensation offered with official apology serve any purpose? Is it a burden on the current Canadian tax-payer while repairing the image of the current government in power? Prove your opinion with the help of primary and secondary sources in a Research Essay.
Respond to the above prompt in a short argumentative essay (minimum thousand words) basing on any one apology that the Canadian government offered to a group of people in the recent past. (We discussed some examples in class – Apologies to Chinese Head Tax payers, to Indo-Canadian Community for Komagatamaru, to those who suffered Japanese Internment, the Residential School survivors among many others).Your task is to research at least 3 more apologies (with or without compensation) offered by a Canadian government – federal or provincial or municipal, or an organisation and compare them to Head Tax apology, and Komagatamaru apology. Remember that the essay and its research is only in Canadian Context.
Ensure that your essay is complete with at least three arguments supporting your stance and each argument (in its own paragraph) has proper topic sentence, evidence and analysis of the evidence. At least two pieces of evidence (from external research duly cited) should be provided per paragraph for your essay to qualify as a research essay. One source in each paragraph would be from the primary sources – Gold Mountain or Continuous Journey
You must make suitable introduction with thesis underlined, and a conclusion. Kindly do not add random stuff in your essay. You are also not to make an exploratory essay – it is your Argumentative Essay supported by external research.Your essay will be graded on format, content, and presentation of the argument. The rubric is being posted here. (Scroll down to view). Upload your completed essay on this link in an MS Word File by the due date and time. Any assignment posted in .pages would be unreadable to me, and hence may not be graded.Your essay should:

Be written in a minimum thousand words and a maximum twelve hundred words. Mention the word count at the end.
Have at least one detailed introduction and one befitting conclusion paragraph. Body paragraphs can be 3 or more.
Your introduction must have a clear thesis statement which shows your stance and which is underlined.
Have at least two pieces of evidence from secondary sources duly analysed in each paragraph, and one piece of evidence from primary source/s (Primary sources are Films – Gold Mountain and Continuous Journey)
Not end or begin any paragraph with a quotation from any source.
Have a title of your own. “Chinese Head Tax” or “Komagata Maru” are not befitting titles
Follow the associated rubric to understand other important expectations from your essay
Have a Works Cited section at the end (not part of word count)

Underline your thesis statement in the introduction paragraph so that I know clearly the line of argument you are taking.
