RE: Effective management of conflict at the Cresta branches of Mr Price, Mr Price Sport and Mr Price Home

To the General Manager of Cresta Mr Price Stores

Introduction: For 36 years, Mr Price Group Limited has seen massive growth in terms of their operations and equity investment in the business due to it being publicly listed on the Johannesburg Securities/Stock Exchange (JSE). This success has been as a result of strong leadership who have always steered the business in the right direction, specifically when it comes to dealing with the issue of conflict.v

Conflict management

Conflict can be defined as the negative differences of opinion, or the varied emotions people experience often due to a dispute over a particular issue.v
Conflict in the workplace is associated with many negative consequences, for example: Mr Price undoubtedly experiences a lot of in-house conflict because employees might disagree with one another or the management of Mr Price.v
There are two types of conflict that Mr Price will encounter: functional and dysfunctional.

Functional conflict

This is conflict that results in a constructive and productive outcome.v
For example: A subordinate and a superior employee are having a dispute about the lack of work ethic that the subordinate is showing. Upon further investigation, the superior learns that it is as a result of the subordinate having recently lost a close family member due to Covid-19. The superior now shows empathy towards the subordinate and the subordinate begins to work in a more positive manner. v
This displays how functional conflict clears the air and allows for situations to be clarified enabling the employees to continue working in a harmonious environment.v

Dysfunctional conflict:

This type of conflict leads to a decline in productivity which ultimately leads to a decline in profitability for Mr Price.
For example: Two cashiers are bickering in front of customers due to personal reasons. As a result, the customers leave, and the employees are unproductive in this time too. This has led to a loss in customers, a loss in profit and has placed Mr Price’s reputation at risk.
