MGMT 3P98 Position Paper

Requirements and Rubric

Below you will find the requirements and rubric for the individual Position Paper project.  This rubric is broken down into the following components:

Each student will be asked to prepare a position paper relevant to International Business.  The paper will be based on a Special Report from the Economist Magazine, Oct. 8, 2022 issue.  This may be found online through the James Gibson Library.  The Special Report includes the following titles:

Regime Change
The ageing paradox
Feedback loop
Greenbacks for greenery
The total bill
Long road back
The end of 2%

The objective of this position paper is to:

Summarize the key points of the paper
Determine what you think this means for the global economy
The implications to business performance over the next 10 years

In any international business context, strategic planning requires taking a position on external developments that will shape business decisions.   This exercise provides you practice for this element of business decision making.

You should approach this project as if senior management has asked you to review the article and advise what the future holds and the implications for business.

Project Report Structure and Expectations

Below you will find six components for the report.  All components of the report must be used as section titles through the report.  Below is what is expected in each component.

Introduction explain (1) what you want to do, (2) why you want to do it, and (3) description of the structure of the paper – e.g., first this paper will examine…, second, something will be introduced, third, a brief comparison between …, lastly, this paper provides a discussion and makes a conclusion……) (4) what the paper will offer and its benefit (5 points)

Summary Overview: This part requires you to synthesize all sections of the Special Report.  This means building a story around the critical elements of the report.  The challenge here is to interlink and relate each of the articles and provide a comprehensive summary of the CURRENT state of the world economy.  (30 points)

Outlook: In this section you should take a position on how you see the global economy unfolding over the next decade.  Based on the topics in the Special Report, you should anticipate what this means in terms of (BUT NOT LIMITMED TO) economic growth, inflation, interest rates, and government fiscal policy. (20 points)

Implications: Here you want to identify what this means to business actions forward.  There will be many implications.  You must identify three DISTINCT implications.  Some that may be considered (BUT NOT LIMITMED TO) include:

Investment choices, including FDI
Competitive advantages
Patterns of Trade and Investment
Regulations and developments in the political economy
Global Business Strategy
Exporting and Outsourcing
Globalization trends

(20 points)

Conclusion: (1) Summary of your overview, expectations, and implications (2) Discuss how your analysis be beneficial to the managers of the two companies?) (10 points)

References and Appendix: All references must be done in  Tables, figures, diagrams are placed after references. Name them as table 1, 2, … In the text, indicate “insert table 1/figure 1/diagram 1 here”.)
