The product I chose to manufacture in Kenya are pistachios. A market for exporting pistachios also exists.

Kenya needs food, it is a basic necessity which should be addressed over desires and unnecessary product such as smartphones or gaming systems. The poverty level in Kenya, despite the countries rapid economic growth, remains close to 16% (Omondi, 2022). The country has high cases of acute malnutrition, which help ensure the demand for products such as avocados or tomatoes (Bhavnani et al, 2023).

A large portion of the country is considered poor, but an even larger portion is considered non-poor (Omondi, 2022). Considering the need for basic food, the country would benefit from fresh fruits and vegetables. Fulfillment of a necessary product could also be subsidized by charitable organization such as the world bank.

A market already exists within the country and demand continues to rise ensuring a healthy market share could be acquired with the right marketing and promotion policies (IndexBox, 2023). The right marketing and promotion into the segment of the household unit is what would set this product apart. The flavor dust on our pistachios would contain healthy vitamins and minerals to help combat the malnutrition.

Exports of the product would be a good start since the market already exists. Growing the product locally would be a challenge since the climate and weather conditions must be just right according to the South African Pistachio Growers Association (n.d.). Farming skills are highly available in Kenya and other nearby regions, as well as demand for work.

Pistachios require specific arid conditions and enjoy infrequent but deep watering (Puisis, 2021). The challenge for this product would be to ensure the business sourced the correct fertilizer, farmers and caretakers and placed trees correctly for pollination (Puisis, 2021).

The expanding market for this product and for exporting it to other countries is makes the pistachio a great choice to develop and promote in and around the country of Kenya.
