Subject: Recommendations for Adopting an Inclusive Workplace Model

Recommendation:

I recommend that the company focus on education and training when adopting an inclusive workplace model. This includes providing training to employees and leadership on topics such as diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as offering resources and support for employees from underrepresented backgrounds.

Benefits:

Adopting an inclusive workplace model can lead to a more diverse and engaged workforce, increased innovation and creativity, and improved retention rates. An inclusive workplace can also enhance the company’s reputation as an employer of choice, which can help attract top talent.

Barriers:

There may be barriers to implementing an inclusive workplace model, such as resistance from employees or leaders who are not familiar with the concept of diversity, equity, and inclusion, or who may feel threatened by changes to the status quo. There may also be logistical challenges, such as finding the time and resources to provide education and training.

Current state:

Currently, the company may be operating under the exclusion value frame, where conformity to pre-established, and norms are prioritized. This may manifest as a lack of diversity in the workforce, a lack of awareness around issues of diversity and inclusion, or a lack of resources and support for employees from underrepresented backgrounds.

Inclusion value frame:

If the company were to operate under the inclusion value frame, it would prioritize changing to reflect the diversity of its workforce and the needs of its employees. This may involve providing resources and support for employees from underrepresented backgrounds, actively recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce, and curating a culture of inclusion and belonging.

Barriers to implementation:

Some barriers the company or workgroup is likely to encounter include a lack of buy-in or resistance from employees or leadership, a lack of understanding of the benefits of diversity and inclusion, and a lack of resources or support for implementing changes. Additionally, there may be challenges in identifying and addressing unconscious biases that may be present within the company’s culture or policies. It is essential to address these barriers proactively and to plan for addressing any issues that may arise during the implementation process.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I am providing recommendations for how a company or workgroup can adopt an inclusive workplace model. I start by making a recommendation to focus on education and training for employees and leadership on topics such as diversity, equity, and inclusion. I explain that this can lead to a more diverse and engaged workforce, increased innovation and creativity, and improved retention rates.

Using a company that you wrote about in Case Study / Memo 3 (ABOVE), analyze the company using the inclusive workplace model. As a reminder, this should be a company that you currently work for or have recently worked for.

Practice Questions (answer all questions):

What are the 5 levels of the inclusive workplace model? Describe each level.
Using Step 1 of the inclusive workplace model as a guide, describe the current state of the company, focusing on diversity and inclusion within the workplace (note, you might be able to re-use what you wrote in Case Study 3).
Using Step 2 of the inclusive workplace model as a guide, describe how the company could engage in inclusion through corporate community collaboration. Give specific examples of initiatives the company could focus on and what groups they would work with.
Using Step 3 of the inclusive workplace model as a guide, describe how the company could engage in inclusion through government collaboration. Give specific examples of initiatives the company could focus on and what groups they would impact.
Using Step 4 of the inclusive workplace model as a guide, describe how the company could engage in inclusion through international collaboration. Give specific examples of initiatives the company could focus on and what groups they would work with.
Using Step 5 of the inclusive workplace model as a guide, describe how the company could engage in inclusion through environmental sustainability and justice. Give specific examples of initiatives the company could focus on and what groups they would work with.
Based on your analysis, would it be appropriate for this company to adopt the inclusive workplace model?
If so, what level should they focus on right now? Why?
If not, explain why the model is not appropriate for this company.
